Film festivals around the world present thousands of outstanding new and archive films that don’t get the exposure they deserve. Beyond film festivals, audiences are severely limited by what they can see in public venues, while talented filmmakers are frustrated, unable to reach them. The Open Cinema Unconference brings together distributors, programmers, educators, digital innovators, and more to explore how access to the cinema experience can be transformed for all.
Presented in partnership with VALID.ac and the Louis le Prince Centre with support from the Open Video Alliance.

First Short Steps: Short Film City Filmmakers Event
Saturday 14th November
11am – 1pm
The Carriageworks (CARR3)
£5 / £4
Short Film City 2009 presents a morning event for filmmakers about how to make their first, or next, short film. On average film festivals around the world reject over 90% of the short films submitted to them for consideration. Filmmaking teams are investing significant financial and human resources in producing shorts but the majority of them are unwatchable. In the eyes of programmers, what are they doing wrong? What makes a short film worth showing? What have successful filmmakers done right?
Find out from the First Short Steps panel, made up of film festival programme managers from all over Europe.
