Starting Wednesday 7th May (6 week block) 7.30 – 9.30 pm. This group is open to anyone who knows either knows the basics, is experienced or has been experimenting with scriptwriting for screen. The group is designed so you can work at your own pace on whatever you like, i.e short films, tv, feature film, tv series.

Free media training for Deaf and BME people

As part of WFA’s positive action policy to include under represented people and communities, 45 free places are being offered to Deaf and BME participants on these popular introductory, production based modules, designed to familiarise participants with the Digital Video tools & techniques required to produce a short film from research / scripting to shooting & editing. The courses deliver a hands on, practical approach for new or recent users of DV camcorders and Mac Final Cut Pro editing software, exploring its creative & technical range as well as the basics of setting up and managing a programme.

On successful completion a WFA Certificate of Completion is awarded for the 5 day course & a City & Guilds National Certificate for unit 326-Short Film Production, NVQ level 3 for the 10 day course. The courses comprise up to 15 participants (in 3 groups of 4-5) including a group/s of with Deaf participants. A BSL Interpreter will be available.

Courses run from 9.30am to 5pm daily & dates are:
5 days at WFA in Manchester – Mon 2nd to Fri 6th June
5 days in Chester – Mon 30th June to Fri 4th July
10 days at WFA in Manchester – Mon 1st Sept to Fri 12th Sept

There are Q & A sessions at WFA on 14th May and 14th August and in Chester on 17th June with a BSL Interpreter in attendance on each day between 10.30 am to 12.30 pm. BBC seeks next generation of TV writers

The next generation of TV writers are being sought by the BBC for its prestigious Drama Writers Academy, a unique course that equips writers with the skills to work on BBC flagship continuing drama programmes. The Academy is the only course in the world that guarantees writers the opportunity to work on prime time television. Established by BBC Controller of Drama Production John Yorke, its aim is to create a pool of writing talent to work on some of BBC One’s best-loved and most popular shows – EastEnders, Casualty, Holby City and Doctors.

Students that secure a place will enjoy masterclasses from the best in the business. Alongside training on all aspects of drama production from editing to scheduling, students will receive direct writing experience on continuing dramas, with the aim of transmitting their finished scripts on BBC One. Creativity, talent and a passion for telling stories are essential criteria for those applying. Applicants must have had at least one professional commission in either television, theatre, radio or film.

Scriptwriting for Radio and Television

Tutor: Jenny Roche. This course will enable beginners and those with some writing experience to develop the skills of writing scripts for radio and television. Looking at the storytelling elements of character, dialogue, plot and structure, it will also explore radio and television scriptwriting opportunities.
